Mafatu's Saga

On the coast of Scandinavia there lived a young man named Mafatu. Mafatu was a son of a great warrior, Art Longtrunk. Art Longtrunk became a great warrior when he was nine.
Art's island was attacked. The island was attacked by cruel Greenland warriors of about 135, led by Crong Axehead. It was a total massacre. Art's country was very peaceful. They had 50 women and children, 30 old people, and 20 warriors.
During the heat of the "fight," Art ran toward midland into a forest. He was finishing cursing himself when he heard rustling and he grabbed for his knife, but he had dropped it. Out stepped a wood elf with a white mare, carrying a great sword. Her name was Idun in honor of the god of youth Idun. (Elves are believed to be Idun's patron creature.) She said in a voice like warm honey, "I have watched you since birth. You are chosen. Take the sword and the horse. If you use the sword for good, then you shall keep the sword. If not, suffer the consequences. Do not use the horse for work. The last day of the seventh month every year, she shall disappear and report to me" With that, she was gone.

Without hesitation he grabbed the sword and he surged with power. His muscles bulged as he rode for the village. He slew Crong and was made chieftain and married a beautiful girl named Linette..

However, everyone thinks that Mafatu is an awful fighter. It's much worse because his father was such a good fighter. So Mafatu is practically abandoned by his father. His mother died giving birth. Only Art's servants care about Mafatu. They built him a little hut about ten yards from the main house.

Art Longtrunk's farm consists of a stable, main house, an armory, Mafatu's hut, and servant's quarters. There are two dairies and a smoke house. It is over one hundred acres. There is a stone wall around the farm, making it an almost impenetrable fortress. He has a horse that seems to turn invisible at times.

Mafatu woke one morning to the sound of shouts of men. It sounded like somebody was shouting about a serpent. It was "serpentbreeck." A man screaming "serpent breathing ice" was cut short. Mafatu shot out of bed, dressed, strapped on his knife, and ran out the door. He ran up to look out mountain and he saw a serpent as big as three longboats. It was breathing ice.

He saw how badly the men were doing and he knew there was going to be a town meeting. He spent the day staying inland looking for rabbits and worrying. When he got there they had already started. Mafatu didn't listen to what they were saying. "I will go fight the monster, if you let me try, he will die. But if I am to go, then you must give me a bow and arrows and the sacred feathers for I believe they will help me beat the monster."

"No, don't give him the feathers. He will sail away from here and never come back. Then we would not have our history," said Art.

"Quiet, crazy man. I would have a hard time believing that Mafatu would run away with the sacred bow and arrows," said Lord Brocktree. Lord Brocktree was Mafatu's grandfather. He lived through the time of Crong Axehead.

"Yes, we will let you go, Mafatu, but you better kill the monster," said the council.

Later...

"The people just don't respect other people. If they only did," he thought, referring to the way his father acted to him in the council meeting.

Mafatu was running down the bank towards the fishing boat. Fishing boats in this village were very small longboats. He stopped in his tracks, seeing all the damage the serpent had made. He wondered why the men had even tried to fight, there were too many corpses to count. The bank was sloped down to the water. It was red with extra iron, metal, and glass. It was very dangerous to walk on.

He then jumped into the fishing boat that the council had provided and started rowing toward the serpent. He strung the bow and let fly an arrow to tell the serpent he was there. The serpent rose out of the water. He saw the serpent breathing an ice breath. Mafatu fired the shot. It was perfect it hit the serpent's heart just as Mafatu was hit and frozen by his breath. While the serpent fell a mist arose and suddenly another serpent came up. It suddenly shot a small blast of fire at Mafatu. It melted the ice, but didn't hurt Mafatu. Mafatu shot an arrow. It fell wide to the right. His second shot was dead on and the monster breathed fire, but it kept going to the heart and burned him up. He was triumphant.

Later...
In the midst of the celebration, Art took Mafatu over and said, "I give you a new name, Cedric Longtooth.

Then Lord Bulgarath said, "I would like you to take my daughter as your wife."

So Cedric said, "I will." So he took Lord Bulgarath's daughter, named Dillyn, and they had a great celebration and they got married.
